Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture, the place where the canvas is borned, is the most famous canvas producing area in Japan. Founded in 1888, Kurashiki canvas has maintained its top position among all other kinds of Japanese canvas. It has been bestowed upon by the canvas industry as the representative brand of Japan.
Kunei's tote bag series is made of Kurashiki canvas that is strong, durable and splendid. Only a small number of craftsmanship and special looms can produce such a canvas. The antique shuttle looms, no longer available in the market, have been employed.
Different from all other brands, only about 50m to 70m of our Kurashiki canvas can be produced per day, imbuing with the surrounding air, and showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
A thinner, lighter, exceptional Kurashiki canvas is available in the season.
For generations, Kurashiki/Kojima has been renowned for its textile industry, and the time-honoured "shuttle loom" reigns supreme. The #10 canvas woven on these looms, complete with selvedge edges, exudes a distinctive texture and plumpness, achieved through high-density weaving that results in a tactile surface. Additionally, it undergoes a paraffin treatment to enhance its unique stiffness.
The shuttle loom weaves fabric by shuttling back and forth, resulting in selvedge edges on the fabric. Only a limited 50 meters of this canvas can be produced by skilled artisans per day, as the loom requires adjustments based on the day's temperature and humidity.
Kurashiki uses soft and strong yarns by twisting them with several 100% cotton yarns with time, to form a durable bond. Weaving from the shuttle looms is so slow that only about 50m to 70m can be produced per day.
The fabric, woven with high density, is water resistant due to the presence of natural oils in the cotton. Seeping is prevented as the wetness causes the fibres to swell and close the gaps between them, lessening your worries on rainy days.
Kurashiki canvas is known for its sturdy and durable weave, with only a thickness of 1.2mm, while remaining remarkably lightweight.

Strength and durability, one of the finest leathers.
British Bridle Leather, known as "waxed-finished leather" was developed in the 14th century in Britain for riders and nobility. It is considered one of the finest leathers in the world.
Kunei proudly utilizes bridle leather crafted with the time-honoured techniques inherited from Clayton, a prestigious company steeped in history, undergoing a meticulous process lasting over 16 weeks.
Bridle leather is renowned for its usage in crucial equestrian components like reins and saddles. To ensure exceptional strength and durability, we choose the toughest and most delicate section of the cowhide.
Employing a labour-intensive vegetable tanning method, the leather goes through an extended ageing process, gradually transforming the fibres from soft to firm. A distinctive blend of beeswax and oil is carefully applied, followed by skilful brushing, resulting in a leather of remarkable resilience and sturdiness.
Since it is inclusive of wax, the bridle leather maintains its softness while offering high water resistance, making it suitable for tough and demanding use.
The British Bridle Leather is known as one of the finest leathers for its strength and longevity. The Leather was originally adopted on horse bridles when horses were still the main transport in our daily life. It is subjected to high loads and poor weather.
Treated with vegetable leather tanned with animal oil, named “SEGO Oil”, the antique leather is tanned in an environmentally friendly method, resulting in a supple, soft leather with a subtle oily texture.
Furthermore, being an Aniline leather, it is solely dyed with soluble dyes. Unlike leather treated with topcoat paint or insoluble pigmented sealant, this naturally dyed leather retains a more authentic leather appearance, enabling you to appreciate the unique colour transformations that occur as the leather ages.
